Ford 4.6L V8 Intake Manifold Replacement

Some Ford 4.6L V8 engines have an intake manifold that integrates with the cooling system. If the intake manifold gasket fails or the manifold itself cracks, coolant may leak into the engine. This could result in a loss of coolant, engine overheating, or even internal damage.

Some other symptoms

  • A vacuum leak or improper sealing of the intake manifold can lead to an imbalanced air/fuel mixture. This can cause the engine to burn more fuel than necessary, leading to a decrease in fuel economy.

  • A damaged or leaking intake manifold can cause air and fuel mixture problems, leading to misfires in one or more cylinders. This could result in rough idling or a noticeable drop in engine performance, especially under load or acceleration. Especially if coolant is leaking into the spark plug cylinders.

  • Overheating -If the intake manifold gasket is leaking coolant (on engines that use coolant passages through the manifold), it can cause the engine to overheat. In some cases, coolant leaking into the intake manifold can cause white smoke from the exhaust due to coolant burning off.

Steps to replace Ford 4.6L Intake Manifold

(2011 Ford E-150 4.6L V8)

1. Disconnect battery

2. Remove air intake clamps & sensor

3. Remove plastic trim

4. Pull out air intake with filter housing

5. Inside the vehicle remove console clips and remove console

6. Unplug oxygen sensors and any sensors surrounding the intake manifold

7. Remove hoses attached to the EGR

8. Unplug ignition coils and fuel injectors

9. Remove the four 8mm bolts holding down the fuel rail

10. Remove the fuel rail and set aside

11. Remove the upper alternator bracket

12. Remove upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing ( set an oil pan underneath for any coolant that leaks out)

13. Remove heater hose next to the thermostat housing

14. Remove bolts holding the intake manifold (10mm)

15. Remove intake manifold and clean the surface with a vacuum to remove any dirt

16. Swap the EGR and throttle body to the new intake manifold

17. Reinstall everything back together make sure to follow tightening sequence when tightening the intake manifold bolts and proper torque spec.
